Napier witnesses: Roderick Mackenzie (Coll)

Roderick Mackenzie from Nether Coll near Stornoway gave evidence to the Napier Commission at Stornoway on 8 June 1883. The 1881 census shows him on Coll Road, with his wife Mary (74) and daughters Catherine (40) and Margaret (29), son Allan (erroneously marked as son-in-law) and granddaughter Isabella. The same family appears in 1871; the returns for 1851 and 1861 also show a son Murdo (younger than Catherine)  and a child Malcolm (6), whose relationship to other members of the family is not specified.

Roderick Mackenzie passed away on 1 March 1885 at the age of 71. He was the son of John and Christina (nee Macleod). Cause of death is splenitis for 6 months. Roderick's age appears to be a tad uncertain, when compared with the census records.

Fallen from aloft

I am presently trawling the archives of the Stornoway Gazette, looking for tributes to men who fell in the service of King and country during the First World War. The Gazette was not published until January 1917, meaning that the first half of the Great War was not covered. The tributes are incorporated into my WW1 tribute site " Faces from the Lewis War Memorial " (link leads to page with links to tributes). Apart from that, I have also come across a tragic accident, in which a sailor was killed on board his ship. The Gazette reported on 4 May 1917 that the Norwegian barque Yuba had been brought in for inspection. The captain reported that he had found one of his seaman lying dead on the deck. He had gone up the rigging in the dark, and had evidently fallen from aloft. The remains were buried at Sandwick Cemetery. I intend to visit Sandwick Cemetery to find that sailor's grave, and have also found out that the Yuba did not outlive its unfortunate crewmemb...

Lady Matheson gives away some land

Scottish Highlander, 1 January 1886 Lady Matheson of the Lewis and Her Crofters Lady Matheson has made a fair step in the right direction, having re-lotted part of the Portdue forest which was cultivated many years ago by a happy and contented race of tenantry. A number of Lochsmen have now got lands at fair rent. It is to be hoped that this is but the forerunner of a large scheme of reform in connection with the estate management of the Lewis. [ends] I take Portdue Forest to be the present-day Eishken Estate, bearing in mind the reference to past tenants.
