Napier Report: transcription complete

I have now completed the transcription of the whole body of evidence, submitted to Lord Napier and his Commission in 1883. The last section, taken at Lanark and Edinburgh, is available for reading here. What remains for me to do is the Appendices, which comprise another few hundred pages. The evidence is split up over several more blogsites.

Raasay weeps

A harrowing tale of evictions from the island of Raasay, as I continue to copy, paste and clean up the findings of the Napier Commission, now sitting at Torran in Raasay. Raasay is the longish island off the east coast of Skye. Donald Mcleod, a 78-year old former fisherman from Rona, just north of Raasay, tells of the evictions of fourteen townships. Chairman Lord Napier is asking about this. 7837. We want to find out if you know about the evictions in former times. The first one began in the time of M'Leod himself about forty years ago. Do you recollect that? —I don't remember the first removing, but I remember Mr Rainy about thirty years ago clearing fourteen townships, and he made them into a sheep farm which he had in his own hands. 7838. What became of the people? —They went to other kingdoms—some to America, some to Australia, and other places that they could think of. Mr Rainy enacted a rule that no one should marry in the island. Napier witnesses: Angus Campbell

Angus Campbell , a crofter at Plocropol, can be found in the 1881 census with his wife Margaret, four years his junior. Their son Alex[ande]r (26) is a general merchant. His other children include Chirsty (24), Murdo (22, fisherman), John (19, fisherman), Angus (17), and two daughters named Cathrine (aged 10 and 7). Ten years before, the family is picked up in the census of 1871, but their ages appear to be 3 or 4 years younger than you would have anticipated. Angus is at that time a crofter and fisherman, still in the Bays area of Harris.  I have not been able to locate Angus Campbell with any certainty in the censuses for 1851 or 1841. EDIT : Direcleit has kindly added the census entry for 1861 in the comments section.  Going forward, the family is still in Plocropol (no 7) in 1891, although Angus (65) is marked as being born in Lewis, Ross-shire. Lady Matheson gives away some land

Scottish Highlander, 1 January 1886 Lady Matheson of the Lewis and Her Crofters Lady Matheson has made a fair step in the right direction, having re-lotted part of the Portdue forest which was cultivated many years ago by a happy and contented race of tenantry. A number of Lochsmen have now got lands at fair rent. It is to be hoped that this is but the forerunner of a large scheme of reform in connection with the estate management of the Lewis.
